Uruguay's left celebrated a new era of political domination on Monday as local election results confirmed it had extended its power to important rural provinces for the first time.
Official results on Monday morning showed the province of Maldonaldo had swung to the Broad Front movement, a leftwing coalition headed by President Tabaré Vázquez. That victory brought to seven with an eighth expected to be confirmed yesterday afternoon the number of provinces now held by the left, compared with just one when Mr Vázquez took office on March 1. The traditional parties, the Colorados and the National party, lost significant ground and now hold just 11 of Uruguay's 19 provinces.
