Lady Ashton, the European Union’s new foreign affairs supremo, has barely one week to prepare for a daunting agenda before she takes over from Javier Solana, the present incumbent, on December 1.
On her second day in office, the woman who is currently EU commissioner for external trade, and only emerged as a last-minute candidate for the job of “high representative” last week, is expected to face a grilling from members of the European parliament.
