US retail sales slide 1.2% in September

US retail sales fell 1.2 per cent in September, experiencing their steepest drop in three years, as turmoil in the banking system and rising unemployment caused consumers to retrench.

The data, released on Wednesday by the commerce department, was much worse than the 0.7 per cent decline expected by economists, and could cement expectations that the US economy contracted in the third quarter.
