Limited legacy for 'le bulldozer' French president

Few politicians can pat a cow's hindquarters with anything resembling the pleasure of Jacques Chirac.

So it seems fitting that before France's president announced his decision yesterday not to stand for re-election this year, two of his last public appearances were at the Paris agricultural show and a European summit in Brussels, the site of his many battles in defence of French farming subsidies.
