Poverty drives Darling back to prudence

Alistair Darling is boxed in as he prepares for the gathering of the Group of 20 finance ministers and central bank governors on Friday in Horsham.

The US has piled on the pressure this week for all big economies to give further ­fiscal boosts in 2009 and 2010, but the public finances have never been so weak in peacetime.
