Curfews put in place as de Villepin pledges cash

French officials last night ordered curfews in some Paris suburbs to contain widespread rioting, as Dominique de Villepin, prime minister, appeared on television promising to spend more on poor urban areas.

The violence has grown on each of the past 11 days. The rioting, mostly by children of immigrants in areas blighted by high unemployment, decrepit housing and poor schools, has spread across France and affected 274 urban areas.
