Indonesia’s former dictator, Suharto, who ruled his country with an iron fist for 32 years until 1998, died Sunday of multiple organ failure after years of steadily deteriorating health. He was 86.
The retired general, who is due to be buried on Monday next to his wife near the city of Solo in central Java, was variously revered as Indonesia’s “father of development” and at the same time castigated as one of the world’s most corrupt and brutal autocrats.
