Once upon a time, Scotland’s banks made a show of largesse at the Edinburgh International Festival. No longer. It doesn’t do to throw hundreds of thousands of pounds at high culture when hundreds of millions have just disappeared off your balance sheet. More’s the pity, because bankers could have drawn solace from Friday’s opening concert.
