UK warned of 'mission creep' in drugs war

The new British Foreign Office minister with responsibility for international drugs policy arrived in Kabul yesterday as experts warned the UK military risked being drawn into Afghanistan's drug war.

Kim Howells' arrival coincided with confirmation that thousands of extra British troops will be sent to Afghanistan as early as next spring, when Britain assumes leadership of Nato's expanding peacekeeping mission there. The UK has about 500 troops in Nato's International Security Assistance Force.
