Shell’s fourth-quarter profits tumble

Royal Dutch Shell suffered a sharp decline in profits in the fourth quarter because of the fall in the oil price, but it has still recorded the largest annual profit for a European company.

It has also committed to maintaining its capital spending programme this year – one of the largest in the world – at close to last year’s level, in spite of the weaker outlook for oil and gas demand and prices.
