Non-profit: Charities seek support in the schoolroom

The economic downturn has put non-profit organisations under intense pressure. Just as the demand for their goods and services has increased, sources of funding have diminished. Endowments, which serve as one of the biggest sources of support for the non-profit sector, have fallen more than 40 per cent since September, donors are putting off making big gifts and giving by individuals is dwindling.

According to some social sector experts, 100,000 nonprofit organisations are at risk of collapsing this year from frozen lines of credit, late payments by government entities and inefficient management.
