Justices rule on benefit plan claims

Administrators of employee benefit plans have a potential conflict of interest if they are responsible for deciding both the eligibility for benefits and whether to payout on claims, the US Supreme Court ruled on Thursday.

The justices decided that courts reviewing cases where a claimant was denied disability benefits are entitled to take into account the potential conflict engendered by this kind of dual rule.
