South African lenders play waiting game

When Lehman Brothers collapsed last year, Errol Kruger, South Africa’s banking regulator, said it was like “hearing about a murder in the house next door”.

Like the executives at the banks he polices – Africa’s largest which, these days, enjoy market capitalisations bigger than the stricken foreign banks that hold stakes in some of them – he struggled to suppress a note of Schadenfreude.
