Nato strike kills up to 90 Afghan civilians

A Nato aircraft fired on hijacked fuel tankers in Afghanistan yesterday, igniting a firestorm that burned an estimated 90 people alive and dealt a blow to a US strategy that hinges on avoiding civilian deaths.

The strike, called by a German commander in the area, comes at a critical time for the eight-year western intervention in Afghanistan, which is struggling to contain a renewed Taliban insurgency amid waning support among the public in the US and Europe.
