Investing in start-up companies producing things green is a good way to feel warm inside. But does it make financial sense?

Cleantech technologies are often complex and untried, ergo risky, say the doomsayers, and the sector is heavily dependent on the right government regulation being in place. There is also the risk of irrational exuberance leading to bubbles, as per last year’s biofuels-tortilla debacle.
