When Ismail Haniyeh made his first overseas trip as Palestinian prime minister last month, it was no surprise that Egypt was the location of choice.

As leader of the Hamas-led government that has been ostracised by the western world, Mr Haniyeh is hardly flush with choices. And the Palestinian-Israeli conflict has long been top of Cairo’s foreign policy agenda, driven by domestic, regional and national security issues.
