Equities retreat after risk appetite evaporates

US and European equity markets retreated and the dollar and Japanese yen rallied yesterday as the tentative improvement in investor risk appetite seen earlier this week showed signs of fading.

Financial stocks in particular gave back some of the spectacular gains of recent days as optimism about a "bad" or "aggregator" bank in the US to ring-fence toxic assets began to wane.
