Fear of severe downturn grips world markets

Fears of a severe recession gripped financial markets on Thursday as dire unemployment figures from the US drove long-term interest rates down to record lows.

In New York, the Dow Jones Industrial average was down 5.2 per cent in late trade while the S&P 500 fell more than 6 per cent.
