Exhaustive negotiations have left no alternative solution

For Wolfgang Ischinger, the German diplomat at the heart of negotiations between Serbia and the Kosovar Albanians, this is doubtless a day of mixed emotions.

On the one hand, Mr Ischinger, Germany's ambassador to the UK, will today report to the United Nations and the European Union that 120 days of negotiations to seek a settlement between Belgrade and Pristina have failed.
