Shopping is still as volatile as an English summer

The weather may have cheered up, but retail executives are still mired in gloom. As a slew of chains from B&Q to New Look deliver strong financial results, their leaders are determined to stamp out any suggestions of sunnier times ahead.

Carl McPhail, chief executive of New Look, refused to muster an ounce of optimism yesterday even as Britain's third-biggest clothing chain reported positive underlying sales growth and strong profits.
