The days when the National Health Service can choose which clinical services it puts out to tender are coming to an end, says the man who until three weeks ago headed the health department's commercial directorate, negotiating contracts worth billions of pounds.

European law was set to force the NHS to open up many more of its services to bids from private sector companies, said Ken Anderson, who now works for UBS, the investment bank.
