Hooking up a group of computers in a home or small office to make it easier to exchange files, share peripherals such as printers or a broadband internet connection, used to be time-consuming and tricky.

Usually it involved dragging cables under floors and through walls, working out complex configuration routines and grappling with an alphabet soup of acronyms.
