JD Sports bucks weak high street trend

JD Sports Fashion, the sportswear chain, outshone its peers as shoppers made a late dash for upmarket trainers.

Shares in the company rose 22½p, or nearly 11 per cent, to 227½p as sales, after stripping out the effect of new store openings, rose 2.8 per cent year-on-year during the five weeks to January 3. That was a striking performance given many fashion retailers have suffered flat sales this year.
