Likud kept guessing on future of Sharon

Ariel Sharon, prime minister, kept Israel guessing yesterday about his political future, amid frantic speculation that he was about to leave the ruling Likud and form a new centrist party to fight an election in four months' time.

Mr Sharon was among the few senior figures yet to comment on reports emanating from his inner circle of advisers that such an announcement was imminent.
