Lester Crawford yesterday resigned as head of the Food and Drug Administration, effective immediately, amid constant criticism that the US medicines regulator was not adequately addressing safety monitoring lapses.

The White House appeared set quickly to replace Mr Crawford, whom the Senate confirmed for the job only three months ago. Yesterday it named as acting commissioner Andrew Von Eschenbach, director of the National Cancer Institute.
