Overview: Stock markets crash as crisis deepens

Panic selling prompted a crash in global stocks this week, sweeping many markets to their steepest ever falls as investors dismissed moves by governments and central banks to calm things.

European shares had their worst week in history, falling 22 per cent, and Wall Street had its second biggest weekly drop. The UK stock market suffered its second biggest fall in percentage terms - down 21 per cent - second only to the crash of October 1987.
