Labour on Tuesday gambled on a quick dash to the polls, announcing it will hold a by-election in Glasgow East in little over three weeks.

If the Scottish National party does overturn Labour’s majority of 13,507 in one of Scotland’s poorest Westminster constituencies, it would deal a devastating blow to the prime minister.
