Shares in Parmalat tumbled by a fifth on Tuesday after a US court ordered the Italian dairy company to pay Citigroup $364m, in the first of several lawsuits the company is facing over its collapse in 2003.

The stock was down 19.9 per cent at the close of trading in Milan, as investors rushed for the exit after the court in New Jersey awarded the damages to Citigroup.
