Northern Rock last week borrowed a further £3bn from the Bank of England, it emerged on Thursday, taking the total to about £16bn.

Five weeks after the lender first went to the Bank for support, its weekly borrowing was up from £2.3bn in the week to October 10 and £2.9bn the week before.
