Italians were recovering on Friday from the surprise of having seen Silvio Berlusconi, prime minister and scourge of Italy’s judicial system, pay an entirely voluntary visit to prosecutors in Rome.
Mr Berlusconi’s clashes with the judiciary have been a hallmark of his premiership, which started in May 2001. He sometimes accuses leftwing magistrates of plotting to destroy his career by putting him on trial for political motives.
