A week that shook the system to its core

A seismic bank failure, rescue takeovers of grand old names on Wall Street and in the City of London, draconian regulation, and a massive government bailout of the US financial system. These had been seen as inevitable consequences of the credit crunch. No one thought they would occur in the same week.

Investors say a financial crisis cannot end until there is a single event so painful that no one believes things can get worse.
