Gold Fields chief steps down

Ian Cockerill resigned on Monday as chief executive of Gold Fields, one of the world’s largest gold producers, in an apparently amicable decision to join a company outside the gold industry.

Mr Cockerill, 54, leaves after six years as one of South Africa’s most prominent mining chiefs. Nick Holland, Gold Fields’ long-serving finance director, will succeed him as chief executive from May 1.
