Threat the rail system can do little to prevent

Rail industry figures believe there is little they can do if, as appears may have happened on Saturday, a motorist sets out to let a train hit his car. The safety record of the railways has improved greatly in recent years but deliberate misuse of crossings is one of the hardest risks to protect against.

The crash took place at a crossing where a barrier blocks half the road on each side of the railway on a train's approach.
