Regional policy: Focusing on the north-south conundrum

At some point next year, the government will report progress on its long-term regional policy target – to “make sustainable improvements in the economic performance of all English regions and over the long-term reduce the persistent gap in growth rates between the regions”.

Commentators have a range of opinions on this target. A committee of MPs examining regional disparities in prosperity said the target was consistently described by experts as challenging and ambitious. government-speak for very difficult, the MPs joked.
