Tesco rethinks housing concept

Tesco is quietly scaling down efforts to become a housebuilder, culling its ambitions to become a property developer in the face of the grinding recession.

The retailer, which two years ago said it was planning to build 2,000 homes in the UK by the end of 2010 as part of its programme to secure new sites for supermarkets, is reducing its mixed-use development work in light of the downturn.
