Europe’s record-breaking summer weather has been caused by the unusual position this year of the jet stream, a ribbon of air that steers the weather systems over the continent. The jet stream has been further south than normal, allowing an area of low pressure to settle over northern Europe, bringing stormy wet weather to the north but also pulling in hot air from Africa and the sub-tropics which has caused the heatwave afflicting southern Europe.
