‘87 crash heralded birth of electronic trading

On trading floors across the world, the market crash was greeted with the sound of silence. As the Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged, telephones went unanswered as stunned traders reacted with disbelief.

The lack of communication that day has led many people to regard October 19, 1987 as the birth of electronic trading.
