UK premier faces pull on special relationship

Two days after terrorists drove a blazing vehicle into Glasgow airport last month, George W. Bush picked up a phone on Air Force One and called Gordon Brown to offer US assistance.

To advocates of the “special relationship” between London and Washington, the conversation offered reassurance that the replacement of Tony Blair, Mr Bush’s closest international ally, as prime minister need not lead to any cooling in ties.
