Carmakers shift gear as sales growth dips in China

The sudden slowdown in the rate of growth of Chinese car sales is forcing multinational manufacturers to reassess their ambitions and product range in a market that has become the most important source of growth for global car companies.

Car sales totalled 194,100 units in September, up 14 per cent from August in the first monthly rise since April, when the market began to slow because of Beijing's credit squeeze.
