An outbreak of foot and mouth disease on a cattle farm in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul has put at risk at least half of Brazil's exports of fresh meat, worth $1.9bn (€1.6bn, £1.1bn) in the nine months to September.

The disease was confirmed on Monday in 153 out of 582 cattle on a farm near the Paraguayan border. All 582 are to be slaughtered and no cattle may move into or out of an area in a radius of 25km from the affected farm.
