Overview: Doubts grow about US rescue plan

Uncertainty over the US plan to buy up toxic assets kept equity markets on the back foot on Tuesday.

Investors remained distinctly cautious over how much the $700bn package could help the ailing banking system as members of Congress grilled Hank Paulson, the US Treasury secretary and Ben Bernanke, the Federal Reserve chairman, on the matter.
