MEPs vote against audit of pensions

Members of the European parliament yesterday voted against allowing auditors to check the way they fund their private pensions, raising new concerns over one pension scheme which has a €41m hole the MEPs could ask taxpayers to fill.

One senior MEP yesterday angrily accused colleagues of voting to "screw the public", and said the vote left the parliament open to claims of embezzlement.
