English identity gains favour at British expense

Gordon Brown has been promoting the idea of Britishness - but, in spite of the chancellor, it is a concept that appears to be in decline, according to the British Social Attitudes Survey.

The proportion of the public who say that British is "the best or only" way to describe them has dropped from 52 per cent to 44 per cent in just a decade, the survey found.
