A hungry world will not wait

International summits often produce more photo-opportunities than progress. That could be the fate of next week’s World Food Summit. Pre-meeting talks have removed two targets from the draft of the declaration to be signed then. This weakens its force and urgency at the very moment that past advances are being lost.

There are more than 1bn chronically undernourished people in the world, mostly in Africa and south Asia. The proportion of undernourished people in the developing world has risen to almost one in five – the level of 1990.
