The week in technology: Google checkout goes live

After several months of rumours, speculation and leaked screenshots, Google announced that Checkout, its online payment system, had gone live - though only for merchants in the US.

The news prompted speculation about the implications for PayPal, the online payment business owned by eBay, which has about 10 per cent of the online transactions market (the balance is mostly controlled by credit card companies) and last year earned $330m for eBay.
