Investment banking pays its way again

Royal Bank of Scotland‘s headlong expansion into investment banking through the acquisition of Dutch bank ABN Amro helped trigger the bank’s near-collapse. Could investment banking also help drag it out of state ownership?

Judging by RBS’s first-quarter results, the bank’s much-maligned Global Banking & Markets (GBM) division is certainly helping.
