China and other Asian nations should play a stronger role in rescuing the stalled Doha round of world trade talks, Rob Portman, the US trade representative, said on Monday.

Mr Portman said in Beijing that east Asian nations ? many of which are highly successful goods exporters ? had much to gain from a successful conclusion to the round.
