Until recently, few people had heard of Abertura in western Spain. A village of 500 inhabitants, it was a typical rural community facing oblivion after decades of migration to the cities. However, that was before the inauguration of Abertura Solar, one of the world’s largest solar energy farms.
Opened amid much fanfare last month, the photovoltaic park covers about 180 hectares and has 23MW of installed generation capacity, enough to keep 23,000 households running.
