Overnight interbank lending rates rise

Further travails for banks in Europe reversed the recent easing in overnight lending rates on Monday, while the US Federal Reserve dramatically increased its efforts to alleviate stress in the money markets.

The Fed announced that it would pay interest on excess reserves of cash held by banks at 75 basis points below the current Fed funds rate of 2 per cent. The move is seen as encouraging banks to place money at the Fed and not in lower-yielding Treasury bills.
