GP and consultant awards could be staged

Health ministers are considering staging pay awards for consultants and family doctors in an attempt to control the National Health Service pay bill in the run-up to next year's sharp decline in the NHS spending growth rate.

Recommendations from their pay review bodies are expected to produce below inflation pay rises for all NHS staff and for most below the lower of the government's two main inflation indices, the consumer price index, which currently stands at 2.7 per cent.
